Alert! Velutina Hornet in Málaga (What To Do and What Not To Do)

Velutina in Málaga

As if Vespa orientalis weren’t enough — a species that has spread rapidly and adapted extraordinarily well — we now have the arrival of Vespa velutina, which is even more dangerous.

What is the difference?

It is no larger than the native European hornet. Its key difference lies in its behaviour.

The main problem with the velutina is that it is far more aggressive — in fact, the number of stings has tripled compared to those from native wasp species. It is also considerably harder to eliminate. It tends to build nests at greater heights, sometimes in the canopies of very tall trees, where treatment becomes extremely challenging. Depending on the stage of its reproductive and development cycle, it typically maintains two nests — a primary and a secondary — making eradication a genuine challenge.

So what now?

We are facing an uncertain future. It is unclear whether the already established Vespa orientalis will compete for resources, potentially causing the two species to clash and slow each other’s expansion — or whether they could coexist without direct competition, which would pose an even greater problem, particularly for beekeepers. Two species of apex bee predators could become firmly established across the region. It also remains to be seen how the velutina adapts, as it typically favours more humid climates. In general, however, the outlook is far from encouraging.

The best solution is to rely on professionals.

Vespa orientalis has already sent many people to A&E following stings, and the velutina has a number of fatalities to its name. Under no circumstances should you attempt to attack a nest yourself.
