Cockroaches on the Costa del Sol?
In the province of Málaga we live alongside many kinds of insects, but there is one that triggers the most urgent and desperate calls: the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). Its large size and the fact that the females can fly are the worst nightmare of many families and holiday accommodation businesses.
If one day you walk into the bathroom and see one of these huge cockroaches come out of your shower, there is something important you should know: for that cockroach to get there, a lot of things have gone wrong along the way.
From the outside in, this is the domino effect that brings cockroaches into your home:
1. European regulations and the tools available to the sector
The problem starts further away than you think. Today, European regulations (with good environmental reasons) place quite a few restrictions on the active ingredients and application methods we can use. This is good for the environment, but it means professionals have fewer and fewer “knock-down” tools. That is why, years ago, treatments seemed more instant and the guarantees that could be offered were greater.
2. Street management (local councils)
Your local council does not usually run pest control itself; it puts the service out to public tender. In these tenders, as you would expect with rising costs, the cheapest offer usually wins. Unfortunately, putting cost-cutting first sometimes results in a public service with fewer resources, fewer staff and treatments that are not always frequent enough to keep up with the sewer network.
3. Your residents’ association (your first firewall)
If you live in a flat or on a residential development, the community is a key piece of the puzzle. On the Costa del Sol, it is hard to imagine a residents’ association without a regular pest control contract. This service is the vital firewall between the street (where rats and cockroaches move around) and your home. Not having this service, or hiring one that does not visit often enough, is a direct gateway for the infestation.
4. Plumbing (your home’s last filter)
The last link is your own home. Several things can fail here, but the main factor is the plumbing. The vast majority of these problems can easily be avoided by installing a trapped inspection chamber (a gully trap). It is surprising how rarely we find buildings or villas with one fitted, as it is relatively inexpensive and stops almost 100% of the problems that try to come up through the drains.
Of course, sometimes everything above is perfect and the encounter is pure chance. We have dealt with cases where the cockroach simply flew in through the window, attracted by the light or the warmth. Although it is a huge fright, it is usually rare and a one-off.
Stop it before it becomes a problem. Whether you have a phobia of them, run a holiday rental business or simply want your home on the Costa del Sol to be a place to relax rather than worry, prevention is everything.
At RapiPlaga we are experts in working out where the chain is failing in your home and offering you solutions or regular preventive services to tackle the problem at its root.
