In the province of Málaga, we live alongside many different types of insects, but there is one in particular that generates some of the most urgent and desperate calls we receive: the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana).

Its large size and the fact that females can fly — the infamous “flying cockroaches” — make it one of the worst nightmares for many families and businesses providing tourist accommodation.

If you walk into your bathroom one day and see one of these enormous cockroaches emerging from your shower, there is something important you need to know: for that cockroach to have reached your home, several barriers have probably failed along the way.

Working from the outside in, this is the domino effect that can allow cockroaches to make their way into your property.

1. European regulations and the tools available to pest control professionals

The problem begins further away than you might think.

Today, European regulations impose significant restrictions — for sound environmental reasons — on the active substances and application methods that pest control professionals are permitted to use.

This is positive for the environment, but it also means that professionals have fewer intensive treatment options available than in the past.

This is one of the reasons why treatments carried out years ago sometimes appeared to produce a much more immediate effect and why stronger guarantees could previously be offered.

Your local council will not usually manage pest control services entirely in-house. Instead, these services are generally put out to public tender.

In these procurement processes, and understandably in an economy where costs continue to rise, price can play a significant role in deciding which company wins the contract.

If you live in a block of flats, residential development or gated community, the community of owners plays a crucial role.

On the Costa del Sol, it is difficult to imagine a well-managed residential community without some form of regular pest control programme.

This service acts as an essential barrier between public areas — where rats and cockroaches can circulate — and your home.

Not having a pest control programme in place, or using one that does not provide treatments at the appropriate frequency, can create a direct route for pests to enter the building.

4. Plumbing: your home’s final barrier

The final link in the chain is your own property.

Several things can go wrong here, but one of the most important factors is the plumbing system.

A large proportion of these problems can be prevented relatively easily by installing an appropriate trapped inspection chamber or water-sealed drainage system.

It is surprising how uncommon these systems can be in some residential communities and villas, particularly considering that they are relatively inexpensive and can prevent the vast majority of pest problems involving insects attempting to enter through drains.

Of course, sometimes everything mentioned above is working perfectly and the encounter is simply a one-off.

We have dealt with cases where a cockroach has simply flown through an open window, attracted by light or warmth.

Although seeing one can be extremely unpleasant, these isolated incidents tend to be relatively rare and do not necessarily indicate an infestation inside the property.
